Working for You


Each month we provide some key areas where MGGA leaders and staff have been working on your behalf. Here is a sampling of important issues and activities for June 2023:

*Summer Board Meeting where directors discussed board member engagement, code of ethics, convention update, legislative report, committee assignments and an update from MWBC.

*Golf Tournament brought an impactful amount of financial support in the Calcutta and an abundant amount of rain on the day of the tournament.

*Intern Cloe virtually joined a Rail Safety Webinar put on by GoRail. Brenda Moscoso, AVP, Safety and Policy Analysis for the Association of American Railroads, Andy Elkins, the manager
of hazmat compliance for the AAR, and Melissa Connoly, AVP, government affairs at the AAR.

*President Keane and VP Heilig joined the virtual NAWG Board Meeting. Former House Ag Committee Chairman Collin Peterson gave his perspective and outlook for the upcoming
Farm Bill.

*EVP Vergeront joined virtually to the Montana Pulse Crop Committee meeting that took place in Plentywood. MGGA will submit a request for a second year of the contract for the executive director through Montana Department of Agriculture in the Spring of 2024.

*Treasurer Lohr and Mitch Konen attended the NBGA Summer Board Meeting in St. Louis. A tour of Bayer, St. Louis Cardinals vs San Francisco baseball game and two days full of meetings took place.

*EVP Vergeront and President Keane participated in the virtual NAWG Domestic Trade Policy Committee meeting. Dan Dye from Ardent Mills gave an update on wheat and flour imports
and domestic production. NAWG staff gave a brief update on the 2023 Farm Bill as NAWG is preparing for two fly-ins in July and September.

*EVP Vergeront and Secretary Sheffels attended an Ag Roundtable with Congressman Rosendale in Great Falls. Sheffels noted the importance of crop insurance and MAP/FMD funding.

*EVP Vergeront attended the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee meeting in Fort Benton. Vergeront gave an update of the work MGGA board of directors are working on, convention
update and policy work such as food aid legislation, Fort Belknap Water Compact and Farm Bill update.

*VP Heilig and Secretary Sheffels attended the Retirement Party for Mike O’Hara. MGGA thanks Mike for his years and dedication to the industry and leadership on the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee.

*EVP Vergeront had a virtual meeting with members of the Montana Partnership to End Childhood Hunger to discuss how September will showcase and celebrate grain in the schools.

*EVP Vergeront participated in a panel on Crop Production with REAL Montana in Power. Topics presented included crop insurance, conservation programs, market access programs
and foreign market development as well as reference prices and FSA staffing challenges across the state.

*EVP Vergeront virtually met with Hope Stockwell, Administrator for Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Hope spoke about legislative changes with Block Management programs and hunting access agreements.
